How would I do a "Claim To Right" for Kansas Income Taxes. I've figured out how to do it for federal taxes.

I have a sign on bonus that I received in 2022 for working 2 years.  However, I'm going to accept another job that offers a higher salary.  I've figured out how to get the federal tax portion back, but unsure how to get the Kansas state back.

They acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. Yes, I am claiming excess of $3000.

Yes, the IRC 1341 reduces your federal tax liability. Only 9 states will accept an equivalent at the state level and Kansas is not one of them.

Your claim should carry over onto the Kansas return automatically.  Is your income on the Kansas return not reduced by the claim to right amount?

@RobertB4444 no. It didn’t reduce my tax burden, which seems strange. I ended up calling the state revenue office but they made it sound like if my AGI didn’t change then it wouldn’t change my state taxes. They said the tax should trickle down from the federal level?  Does that make sense?

Did the Kansas  Department of Revenue state that Kansas will honor the claim of right repayment on the Kansas state income tax return?

At this point, I am not able to find a reference to 'claim of right' at the Kansas Department of Revenue website here.

Are you reporting the claim of right in excess of $3,000?
