Question

I am a PA resident who works in NJ. There is a reciprocity agreement between the states, and I had taxes withheld in PA. Why is turbotax telling me I owe in NJ?

It depends.

You are correct in that PA has a reciprocity agreement with NJ.  If your state withholding is in PA, you should only need to file your PA return.

Check your input as follows:

  1. On the black panel on the left, select My Info
  2. Select Edit to the right of your name.
  3. Scroll down the page and review the answers to your questions.
  4. Ensure your answers to the state you lived in and any other state questions are answered correctly.
  5. Pay special attention to the line at the bottom which asks if you earned money in another state.  Be sure to answer No here as both states have the reciprocity agreement and agree you only need to file taxes in your state of residence.
