Question

I am a resident of AL but I worked as a nurse for 1 week in NY in 2021. Should I fill out a business allocation schedule form? If so, which version?

I worked as an employee, not as a business owner. I did not rent or buy any property (or anything else) while there. I was working for a travel nursing company.

You have taxable income to New York if you worked in the state.

You can use any version of TurboTax to file a nonresident New York tax return. You don’t have to do a business allocation. Just allocate you W-2 wages.

TurboTax will not bring over your W-2 unless there is a NY code in Box 15.

If not

  1. Go to the New York section
  2. On New York Income Allocation, say No to Were all of your wages and/or self-employment income earned in New York State?
  3. Say Yes to Did you have any New York State Wages?
  4. Enter your Employer and New York State Wages
  5. On Allocate Wages to New York use 100% New York State Income if you only reported the NY wage amount

You can claim a credit on your Alabama return for tax paid to NY.
