I am a VA resident and I made $1,000 in Maryland. I went through the steps to complete a non-Resident MD return. Why was I never asked how much money I made in Maryland?

It says I will owe almost $500 in Maryland. Is this correct or did I miss a step somewhere to input how much money was made in that state?

No, that is not correct. Since Virginia and Maryland have a tax reciprocity agreement, you don't have to pay tax to Maryland on wages earned there if you are a resident of Virginia. You can file the Maryland tax return to claim a refund of taxes if you had taxes withheld there.

When you go through the Maryland tax return, on the page that says Maryland Wage Income, you will see Special instructions to residents of DC, PA, VA or WV. If you read what it says there you will see that you are to enter $0 for your Maryland wages if you were a resident of any one of those states. When you do that, your Maryland wages will not be taxed in Maryland. If you reported any tax withheld in Maryland, it will be refunded to you.
