Question

I bought a house with friends in VT. I don't live there. They have not bought me out yet. Do I have to file a state return for VT if I did not live or work there?

I am still on the mortgage but I do not pay towards the house anymore.

Assuming the house is not a rental property and since you did not live in VT or have any other VT source income you do not have a VT filing requirement.

If the property is a rental property you may have a filing requirement. If either your net VT income is more than $100 or gross VT income was more than $1000, you would have a non-resident filing requirement for the Schedule E income.  Here is the VT reference
