Question

I can't e-file federal... what should I do about New York State?

For some reason, my federal e-file has been rejected because it says the AGI for 2019 doesn't match.  I requested an IRS transcript and the AGI is correct-- but I can't resubmit.  Although it will be slower for me to get a refund, it seems okay for me to mail the federal return.

But now I need to file for New York State, which requires an e-file.  However, I can't e-file state if I can't e-file federal.  I also read that I can't send in a paper return if I used software to prepare my return (which I did-- Turbo tax).  Does this mean I have to copy everything onto a paper form my hand?  Somewhere else I also read that I should include a copy of my federal return.

I have spent hours on this and I'm so frustrated.  I'd appreciate any guidance.  Thank you!!!

You might actually be able to e-file your 2020 federal if you try using zero for the AGI.   But if you cannot get it to e-file, stop panicking about New York.   You can mail your NY return.

If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2019 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2019 AGI might not be in the IRS system.   Try using zero instead.

If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

Or—-if you filed as a “non-filer” just to get the stimulus check on a 2019 return, try using $1 as the AGI.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question.

I did request a "transcript" from the IRS for 2019 and they show the AGI I entered.  Very strange!!  (And frustrating!)  But it's good to know I can still mail the New York return.
