Question

I chose the E-File option on TurboTax, but the IRS sent a physical check to the post office from where I was living and got returned. I am not in the US right now. Help?

You said "efiling" above, but did you mean "direct deposit?"    When efiling, one can choose to get either a paper check in the mail or direct deposit.   Even when filing by mail, one has those same options.

So did you choose to get your refund by direct deposit, but the IRS sent a paper check to the address on the return instead?  And did the post office return it to the IRS as undeliverable?

If so, since you outside the country, we can tell you how to phone the IRS International Taxpayer Service Call Center in Philadelphia for assistance.

The IRS says you might get a paper check instead of a requested direct deposit for one of 3 possible reasons:

  • The IRS can only deposit refunds electronically into accounts in your own name, your spouse's name or in a joint account.
  • A financial institution may reject a direct deposit and send it back to the IRS.
  • The IRS can’t deposit more than three electronic refunds into a single financial account.

Since you are out of the country, you can contact the IRS International Taxpayer Service Call Center in Philadelphia for assistance.  It is not a free call, so be mindful of phone charges.

That office has extended office hours due to the time zone differences.  You will find the phone number in the first paragraph at this page.
