Question

I do not yet have all of my W-2’s from both employments and I am also not sure if being a full-time student from August to present qualifies me as a state resident

Wait to file your return until you receive all of your W-2's from your employers.  The deadline for W-2's to be filed in January 31st.  This will ensure that your return is filed correctly and you won't have to file an amended return.

As a student attending college out-of-stateyou are considered to remain a resident of (i.e. "live in") your home state unless you take action to establish residency in another state (does not have to be the state where you go to college).

You can put whatever address you want on a W-4, but that doesn't change your state of residency.

While in TurboTax Personal Info Section follow these steps:

  1. Select "Your home state" as the state of residence on December 31, 2019;
  2. Answer "No" when asked if you "Lived in another state in 2019?" That question only applies if you changed your state of residence in 2019.
  3. Answer "No" when asked if you "Earned money in another state?", unless you earned money in a state other than your home state..
