I entered zero for allowances on my W-4, but only about 5% of my income was withheld for taxes. Why would so little be withheld?

A lot depends on how much you make in any give pay period. Employers use tables in Pub 15 provided by the IRS that tells them how much to withhold. If you work a part time job, especially, there is no way for the table to take into consideration that there is more income added to what the tables project.
