I got double taxed. How can I get a refund?

My employer had my old address from California on my work profile, while the employer is in Michigan, and I live in Michigan. I got double taxed Michigan and California state withholding taxes taken from my paycheck. How can I get a refund for the California taxes?

If you didn't live in California in 2023, you can file a nonresident CA return with no CA income to get a refund of CA tax withheld.

Okay. I should have clarified that this is from a recent 2024 payslip. Would that then mean the same as long as I don't live in California during 2024?

If you did not live in or work in CA for any part of 2023, then you must file a non-resident CA tax return on which you report the CA withholding but allocate zero income to CA.  That should result in your receiving a full refund of the incorrectly withheld CA taxes.

Thanks. I should have clarified that this is from a recent 2024 payslip. Would that then mean that as long as I don't live in California in 2024 it is the same process?
