Question

I had an internship last year which was based in New York, but I worked remotely. Turbo Tax is asking if I made money in another state, what should I put?

It depends. Did your employer withhold report any income or withhold any New York state tax (W-2 Boxes 16 and 17)?

If they did, say yes you made money in another state.

New York follows the convenience of the employer rule, meaning in most cases, if you worked from home for a New York office, then you must pay New York state income tax. You can claim a credit on your resident state tax return for tax paid to NY.

On my W-2, it does show an amount in boxes 16 and 17, but in box 15, it says state as Illinois (IL). Should it show NY since I worked for a NY office? Since it says IL, should I only file state tax for Illinois?

In your case, you are not treated as an "in-house" employee by the NY company. You should only file a resident IL state income tax return. You should answer No to the question I made money in another state.
