Question

I live and work in only Washington state (no income tax), do I need to declare any "Taxes you paid" part of the 1040 schedule A?

If you think you are going to itemize deductions, fill out the Sales Tax portion of TurboTax.

The IRS permits you to write off either your state and local income tax or sales taxes when itemizing your deductions (but not both). Because you live in a state with no income taxes, you need to fill out the sales tax section.

To fill out the sales tax deduction in TurboTax Online:

  • You should be signed in and working in TurboTax
  • Click on Federal in the left-hand black menu
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Scroll down and click on Show More on Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
  • Click on Start or Revisit on Sales Tax.
