Question

I live in Georgia, but my wife worked (and now lives) in California... does CA get to tax my capital gains?

Hey, folks! Married filing jointly. Two questions:

1. I live in Georgia. My wife moved to California on 11/1/18 and has been there ever since. We both owe taxes from working in Georgia and she owes taxes for working in California. TurboTax is asking me about mortgage rate interest adjustments (we don't own property in California) and it's including my capital gains from investments in her California income tax calculation. Does this strike anyone as odd? Can California tax that?

2. I sent California a payment of $100 to cover any taxes owed on her income prior to April 15. Where should I note that in the return so we can get the remainder refunded?

Is your investment income (capital gains) in a joint account, or in your name only?  If she is an owner of the investment, her capital gains income will be taxed (allocated for the months that she was an official resident of CA).

I'm linking you to an article that I think will inform you about the CA capital gains tax.  It's from 2016, but has been updated more recently.

Your CA estimated tax payment will be entered in your federal interview of TurboTax.  The TurboTax FAQ below will instruct you on where/how to enter that $100 payment you made.  You'll see the place to enter state estimated income tax payments.
