Question

I live in NJ and had some 1099s from NY but it's calculating our NJ W2s in the non-resident return. Help?

My husband and I will file jointly for 2021. He didn't receive any wages from NY, just a few 1099s. I received unemployment from NY and received my 1099-G. In filing the non-resident form it's taxing our entire household income which includes income from NJ and not from NY. I stated that we did not have any wages in NY and only entered the income from our 1099s. Is that correct?

When you file a New York nonresident return return, New York prepares the return as if you were a full year resident to determine your tax.  It then applies the percentage of New York income to the tax so you only pay tax on the New York income.
