Question

I live in one state, but work in another. How do I prepare my two state returns, so that I am not paying income tax twice?

I work in NC and my company withholds for NC, and I have to file in NC.  I live in SC, and SC requires me to file as well including all my income from NC.  How do I prepare the separate tax returns, so I am not being taxed twice?

You will file a non-resident North Carolina return and a resident South Carolina Return. South Carolina will give you credit for taxes paid to another state. This way you are not being taxed on the same income twice.

Do I have to file tax returns in more than one state?

And in TurboTax, be sure to complete the non-resident NC return before you do your home state SC return, so that the program can calculate and apply the credit correctly.
