Question

I live in TX but my retirement is from my old career in NC, where I have not lived for years. Do I file as a NC nonresident with my income coming from NC?

No, you do not have to file a North Carolina tax return. Pension income is considered to be from the state that you live in when you receive the income. So your pension from North Carolina is treated as income from Texas, where you live now.
