Question

I live in Virginia with my wife but work in Pennsylvania. My wife works in Virginia. Do we need to file in both states even though they are reciprocal?

It depends.  If you had no Pennsylvania (PA) withholding, then there is nothing to file for PA.  File only your Virginia (VA) resident return.

If you do have any PA withholding, file only to receive a refund of the tax.  TurboTax will know it is a reciprocal state, however be sure you have zero wages in your W-2 for the state of PA, only list your withholding if applicable.

You would also have to file in PA if you had any PA-source income other than W-2 salary or wages.  Reciprocity applies only to W-2 income.
