I live out of the US but CA FTB is asking me to pay tax for my investment in 2016. How do I fix/avoid that in the future?

I am a non US resident and used to work but moved out of the US 10 years ago. I used a CA mailing address with TurboTax but I didn't file any CA return.

I believe that you would need to file a California nonresident return to show that the income is not sourced to California. You also may contact them and ask California what proof they need to not pay the tax on investments from 2016.
