Question

I lived in 4 different states in 2022, but I was only a registered resident in 2 of those states. How do I find out if my income was taxed by more than 1 state at a time?

For 1 specific state return, I'm not sure if I paid tax on income (wages) that was earned and taxed by another state and the state I'm filing for. How do I figure this out?

If you earned income while living in a state, generally you will file a tax return there.  If you lived in a state for part of the year, file a Part Year Resident Return to report income earned while residing in that state.

If you have a W-2 that reports State Wages and State Tax Paid, enter it as shown in the W-2 section of your Federal return.  Be sure to indicate in the MY INFO section that you 'earned income in other states'.

As you go through the State Interviews, you will be able to adjust the amount of income reported to the state, if it is different than what is shown on your W-2.  If your income was taxed by two states, one state will give you credit for tax you paid to the other state on that income, so you will not be double-taxed.
