Question

I'm not a renter or work out of a location different from my office location. Can I still qualify for itemized deduction on California State Tax?

I'm comparing TurboTax estimate with another third-party tax preparer and I see that TurboTax is doing itemized deduction on my California state tax v/s the other one that is not. The only justification being offered is about being a renter and working out of a different location other than my office location where I have to go in 3days/week which would qualify me for an itemized deduction on state. Any pointers?

As long as your Itemized Deductions exceed your California Standard Deduction amount, TurboTax will automatically apply the Itemized Deduction to your California return, even if you are taking the Federal Standard Deduction.

You can see how much of a deduction you are currently getting by taking the following steps:

1.) On the left-hand side of your screen, click Tax Tools

2.) Click Tools

3.) On the window that pops up, click View Tax Summary

4.) On the left-hand side of your screen, click CA Tax Summary, there will be a line called Itemized/Standard Deduction.

Here's more info on California Itemized Deductions.

Thanks @mglauner

How do I know what my California Standard Deduction amount is? Apologies, I'm trying to do this for the first time myself.

Also, I couldn't find the Tax Tools option on my version of the TurboTax software.

The California standard deduction for single filers is $5,202 and it is $10,404 for married-filing joint in 2022. You find the Tax Tools on your left menu bar in TurboTax, it will look like this:

You can also view what your standard deduction amount is on California Form 540.  Select the forms icon in your desktop version and go to California individual forms. Look on form 540 line 18 and that will also tell you what your Standard Deduction is. Should either be $5202 if filing single or $10404 if filing jointly.
