How to get my money back?

Best answer by Hal_Al

By filing a MI non resident return, you should get a full refund of the withholding. This assumes that you never physically worked in MI, during the year. If you sometimes work in MI, you will have to manually allocate your wages, for a partial refund.

You may want to mail in your MI return, instead if e-filing, so that you can attach an explanatory statement.

Ask your employer to stop withholding MI tax, by completing form MI-W4. On line 8b indicate your reason as "non resident who does not work in MI".

You file a MI non-resident return when you do your 1040.

On that non-resident Michigan return, be sure you allocate zero income to Michigan.
