Question

I moved from California to Michigan in 2020. It's asking me for an exact date that I originally entered CA, which was 15 yrs ago. I only have an approx. date. Is that ok?

I know I moved in during August 2005. I see I ordered a package to first rental apartment from Amazon on Aug 16, 2005. Is it okay to use that date?

We cannot see the question you are referring to ---- we cannot see your screen.   But it is very unlikely that you are being asked for the ancient history of when you moved into the state of California.   The question is likely asking you what part of the TAX YEAR    (2020)   you lived in California for the tax return you are preparing for that year.  So you will file a part year state return for CA and a part-year state of MI return.

And....are you using 2020 software for your 2020 return?   You cannot use the online program for a 2020 return.   Online is only for 2021 returns.

I am using the software. This is the first screen on the State Taxes tab:

Then it asks me Period of California Residency Before 2020. The From field is giving me the biggest grief.

I also am wondering what date my residency ended?

Facts:
I started my lease in Michigan on 5/15/2020. But I continued to keep my lease open in California until July (I could not break my lease agreement. But I was fully living and working in Michigan).

Soon after my move-in date I updated my driver's license to Michigan as well as my vehicle. I also updated my info with my employer.

As you can see, I'm unsure what dates I should put for both 😕😕 Thank you for whatever help you can give.

@maedus

You have two threads going for the same issue.   Please see the reply from your other thread regarding when you became a resident of MI.
