Question

I moved from DC to Virginia in Feb, but my employer kept paying my income taxes to DC. What do I need to do here?

According to my W2s I have a year's worth of state taxes paid to DC, but I moved from DC to VA early in the year.

What do I need to do with my taxes? Can DC cut a check to VA for the 8 months I lived in VA? Can I just like, only pay DC and call it a day?

You will need to file a state return in both DC and Virginia.   You will file the DC return first:

  1. File as a part-year resident
  2. Answer the questions and put in the dates you resided in DC
  3. You will get a refund for the majority of the taxes that were paid to DC by your employer.

Then add the Virginia:

  1. File as a part-year resident
  2. Answer the questions and put in the dates you resided in Virginia.
  3. On this return, you will probably have a balance due.   Hopefully, the amount refunded from DC will be enough to cover the Virginia return.
