Question

I moved from NJ to TX this year with the same parent co. The first 2 checks received post move and related to work post move took NJ taxes - can I get this $ back?

I received 2 W2s the year, and the second one houses the work post move and contains these taxes paid to NJ for the first 2 checks.  This happened because my company didn't change the state since I did not provid the updated W4 until after my first paycheck. How do I get those State taxes refunded/how to I indicate that these taxes were taken when I was a Texas resident and employee?

The easiest way to get the taxes refunded would be to ask your employer to correct your W2  (and remove those two months of New Jersey Wages) and refund the taxes paid.

When you file your part-year return for New Jersey, as long as your W2 is showing as wages earned in New Jersey, you are probably going to end up owing some New Jersey tax.

The other option would be to contact the New Jersey Department of Revenue, explain the situation, and see if you can get help that way, but I think that would be an uphill battle, (but may be worth a try if your employer will not make the correction)  Here is a link to the New Jersey State Department of Revenue:  New Jersey Tax Department Contact Info
