Question

I moved states last year, but my company didn't change my home address, so I was paying the wrong state's taxes. How do I file for this?

You'll have to file a part-year resident return in each of the two states (assuming each state has an income tax).  This FAQ explains how to do that in TurboTax:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901227-how-do-i-file-a-part-year-state-return

You'll receive a refund of the excess withholding from your "old" state, but you'll have to pay your taxes due to the new state.

My new place of residency is FL, so I'm having a hard time filing because their is not state income tax.

The new state doesn't have state taxes taken out.

State taxes were taken out all year State of Georgia

I reside in South Dakota no state taxes

You are a part-year resident of the state of Georgia and a part-year resident of the state of South Dakota.

You will file a part-year resident Georgia state tax return reporting only the income earned when you lived in Georgia.

All of the Georgia income tax withheld in excess of Georgia state income tax owed will be refunded.

In TurboTax Online,

  • Select My Info down the left side of the screen.
  • Select Edit to the right of your name.
  • Your state of residence on December 31, 2023 will be South Dakota.
  • Answer Yes that you lived in another state, Georgia.
  • If you have a spouse, report the same information for the spouse.

Notify your employer to no longer withhold Georgia state income tax.
