Which state do you live in?

If you own a home in VA and live in VA and work in NJ, then you would need to file a Non-Resident return for NJ and a Resident return for VA.  You will file the non-resident return for NJ first and then on your VA resident return, you will claim a credit for taxes paid to NJ.

If you live in NJ and work in NJ but also own a home in VA, you would only file a return for NJ, unless the home you own in VA is producing income in the state.

VA Reciprocal States

Non Resident State Return
