I paid 32 to the state I work in and the state I live in when I do my taxes says I owe 1298 how is this possible

    You have not mentioned which states are involved.  When you work in one state and live in another, it is important to prepare the return for the state you work in first, before preparing the return for your resident state so that you get credit for the tax paid to the non-resident state.
