Question

I retired February 2 2024. All the income I received in 2024 was in Texas. Moved March 31st to NC. My W2 has deducted state taxes. Should I be taxed for NC state taxes?

Please explain.  If you were living in TX before you retired----what state taxes were deducted from your W-2 pay?  TX has no state income tax.

Yes, living in Texas. All the income I received was in Texas. Moved end of March 2024 to NC & I did not have income in NC.
However, W2 I received had state taxes taken for NC.

I heard that I can file Non Residential state taxes taken form to get the refund.  I should be good.
Thank you very much for responding.

And, all retirement /pension income you received after you moved to NC, is considered NC-taxable income, even if you earned the pension in TX.   As-well-as any interest, dividends and capital gains.

(Though, if it is a military pension, NC doesn't tax that...nor US govt pensions from OPM if you had 5 yrs of service with them before 12 Aug of 1989)
