If you worked in California, then you have California income and will file a nonresident CA income tax return.

The CA company that gave you a W-2 may not have withheld any state tax if you gave them a Texas address, but any income earned in California is still taxable.

In the CA section you will have to tell TurboTax how much of your W-2 and 1099 income was earned in CA.

As a nonresident, you pay tax on your taxable income from California sources.

Sourced income includes, but is not limited to:

  • Services performed in California
  • Rent from real property located in California
  • The sale or transfer of real California property
  • Income from a California business, trade or profession
