Question

I worked in New York till Aug 2019 (part-year resident); from Nov 2019 I started working in New Mexico (nonresident). Can I get credit for taxes paid to other state?

Generally, yes, but I am not sure of your particulars. For example, did you move to NM? Or were you a resident of NY the whole time?

Be sure to do your nonresident state first in TurboTax so TurboTax can bring the taxes paid in another state to the NY return.

I moved to NM on August 31.

So you were a part-year resident of both states.

New Mexico says, "

Does New Mexico offer a credit for income tax paid to another state?

Yes, but only for New Mexico state residents. The credit is based on the tax the other state imposes on the portion of gross income that is also included in New Mexico gross income. The credit may not exceed the New Mexico income tax liability, nor can it be more than Q.5% of the income taxable in the other state.

" See this New Mexico webpage.
