Question

I worked in VA, but my permanent residence is in MD. I only made $585 at the university but made a salary in MD. Do i need to specify that I made money in VA?

No, you do not need to specify that you made money in Virginia if your permanent residence is in Maryland.

Because Maryland and Virginia have a reciprocity agreement, you pay income tax only to the State you *live* in, which in your case, is Maryland.

You will only need to file a Virginia Tax Return if your Virginia Employer withheld VA Income Taxes from your paycheck.  If this is the case, you will need to file a Form 763-S Virginia Special Nonresident Claim For Individual Income Tax Withheld in order to receive that withholding back as a refund.
