Question

If I lived in two states how do I itemize the student loan interest paid for each state if one pulls directly from the total in the federal section?

The student loan interest section in the MA State Return pulls from the total input in Federal, so doesn't allow an input of less than the total.

You don't. Many states require great attention to income and then will allocate your deductions for you. MA is doing it for you. You will go through the income screens prorating.  MA will allocate your student loan interest based on your income. Your only adjustment is graduate vs undergraduate.
