Question

If I’m active duty, and claiming my state of residence, but serving in another state, do I need to say that I lived in another state during 2019?

It depends.

Generally, you only need to file a return in your state of residency.

However, some states require that you file a return in the state you reside in while stationed away from your "resident state" if you received income in addition to your military pay.

Please see the attached chart and click on the applicable link to determine if you are subject to filing taxes in another state besides your state of residence.
