Question

If I moved to Kentucky from Wisconsin in November, do I have to pay state taxes in both states on the entire year of income?

I seem to be paying an extremely high state return for Kentucky ($400). I earned income in Kentucky before I was a resident there, but I've done the same for the past 4 years and have never had this problem (I was a college student). I switched my residency on Nov 28th, and I don't want to lie and say I wasn't a resident in December because I was, but why is that making my taxes so high?

When entering your state tax returns, when multiple states are involved, you should enter your nonresidential state tax return first (WI).

Then enter your residential state tax return (KY).

It is recommended to prepare the nonresident state first, because your resident state will provide you a credit for the tax you pay to the nonresident state.  By preparing the nonresident state first, TurboTax can transfer the credit information to your resident state to return.
