I paid a total of $1,444 in Illinois State Income Tax for the 2021 Tax year. After filling my state tax it says I owe $1,444 to the state. Did I do something wrong or will this possibly be correct? I’ve done turbo tax for the past 5 years without having to owe any state income tax

It is hard to tell why you owe the state without being able to look at your return. Double check that the amount in box 16 and 17 on your W-2 were entered correctly.

    Other common reason :

    • Your income increased.
    • You didn't have enough state tax withheld from your paychecks.
    • You lost a dependent.
    • You changed your filing status.

I recommend that you make a line by line comparison with last year's return to see what is different this year.

If you made any estimated tax payments to Illinois, you must enter them manually into TurboTax.  Otherwise the program does not know about them.
