  • My husband's company sent him to another state to help out an office that was understaffed for one week. That income was listed as separate income from another state (we live in AZ, he worked in Utah for one week)  Do I have to file a second state return for Utah?  I already filed for federal (the amounts for Utah and Arizona add up to the amount I claimed on federal), and for AZ (for the AZ amount).  Will my federal and AZ filings be valid or do I have to amend them?

    It depends.

Your federal return is fine as the only question relates to the Arizona and Utah returns.

You will not need to amend your federal return.

When you prepared your Arizona return, did you include all of the wages or only the portion listed as being sourced to Arizona on his W-2?  If you included only the Arizona portion, you may need to amend your Arizona return to report a credit for taxes paid in another state.

You will need to file a nonresident return in Utah to get a refund for any taxes withheld in Utah.

    Utah filing
