Question

Incorrect total withholding on CA state return

I have two sources of state tax withholding - my W-2 ($1701) and a 1099-R ($3550).   The total of the two would be $5250 on my state return.  However, line 71 on CA 540 only shows $5051 which is about $200 short of the total withheld.  What would cause this?  Where can I see the 1099-R data that was downloaded from the brokerage to check that the correct withholding was downloaded?

Interestingly, the total federal withholding is correct.

I have found MY math error.  However, I would still like to know where you can see the data that was imported/downloaded from the brokerage firm.

Yes, there are a couple of ways to see to the 1099-R information that was imported into your tax return.

If you are using TurboTax Online:

    1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
    2. Select Wages & Income.
    3. Scroll down to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), under Retirement Plans and Social Security, select Revisit to the right.
    4. On the screen, Here's your 1099-R info, select Edit to the right of the 1099-R.
    5. You can review the information on the next few screens.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop (software installed on your computer):

    1. Open your software, and your return.
    2. Select the Forms icon in the upper left corner.
    3. Highlight Form 1099R in the list on the left.
    4. You can review the information in the reading pane.

If you have completed your return, you can print or download a copy selecting Forms to keep or review for your records and Tax return, all calculation worksheets. Then, look for Form 1099-R worksheet to see the details.
