Information related to Property Tax Deduction (New Jersey)

Hi there,

I have a question about New Jersey's Property Tax Deduction program.  I live in an apartment building subject to state property tax, so I can deduct part of my rent from taxable income.

1. Do I need to submit any evidence that my building is paying property tax?  Or can the state just verify with my address in the tax form?

2. Do I need to attach any rent payment receipt or just input the number?  As I am using e-file, I assume that I could not attach any personal file via TurboTax?  If the state is very likely to review the rent payment record, I would rather to submit with my initial filing.

Thank you very much!

    1. No, you do not submit any evidence. If the state wants to verify that the building pays property tax, they can do so from public property tax records.

    2. Do not submit any receipts or other records. Just enter the amount of rent that you paid for the year. It is extremely unlikely that the state would question the amount or ask for any proof.
