Is line 66 on Form IT-203 correct on my 2022 New York State Tax Return? How did it compute $3740.00?

NY State computed $1870.00 for State Income Tax withheld. Where did the $3740.00 come from on my 2022 filing done with TurboTax?

We can't see your tax return. From the amounts that you gave, it looks like you might have entered the New York tax withheld twice, because $3,740 is exactly double $1,870.

On Form IT-203, New York state income tax withheld is on line 62. Line 66 is the total of lines 60 through 65. What is the amount on line 62? Is there anything on any of the other lines, 60, 60a, 61, 63, 64, or 65. If there is nothing on any of the other lines, line 66 should be the same as line 62.

Did you have $1,870 state tax withheld in box 17 of a W-2? If you entered that on the screen where you entered the W-2, you should not have entered that amount anywhere else. Did you have any state tax withheld on any other forms besides the W-2? The Tax Payments Worksheet for your New York tax return shows all the withholding that was entered, including any that was entered anywhere other than on a W-2.

If you cannot find where the additional withholding came from, and you want more help, please tell us whether you are using TurboTax Online or the CD/Download TurboTax software.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply. I used TurboTax Online to file my taxes, although when I did the NY State taxes, it required me to mail in a paper copy (Not sure why, but it's the second year in a row that this has happened).

Anyway, I used the online version.

I only entered $1870 once on all my tax returns. That is the amount in box 17 of my W-2. For some reason TT computed on line 66 $3740. (total of lines 60-65)

Where did the additional withholding come from?

You didn't say what's on IT-203 line 62. Since line 66 is the total of lines 60 through 65, in order to figure out where the additional withholding came from, we first have to determine whether it came from line 62 or from one of the other lines that are included in the total. If line 62 is not $3,740, what is on the other lines, 60 through 65? Please post what's on those lines, and ignore the rest of this reply.

If line 62 is $3,740, save a PDF of your tax return with all the government and TurboTax worksheets included. (See the link below for instructions.) In the New York return there will be a Tax Payments Worksheet. (There is also a Tax Payments Worksheet in the federal return, and there might also be one for your resident state, since you apparently do not live in New York. Make sure you are looking at the Tax Payments Worksheet for New York.) On the New York Tax Payments Worksheet, line 14 should be $3,740. That's where the $3,740 on IT-203 line 62 comes from. What is on each of the lines 9 through 13 above that?

If line 9 of the New York Tax Payments Worksheet is $3,740, and there is nothing on lines 10 through 13, then the $3,740 came from a W-2, or from more than one W-2. Look at the Form IT-2 summary of your W-2 forms. (There can be two W-2s on Form IT-2, and there might be more than one IT-2.) That will show you all the W-2 forms that were entered, and, in box 17a, the amount of New York state tax that was withheld on each one. See if there is more than one W-2 with $1,870 in box 17a. The IT-2 forms show you what was entered in TurboTax, which might be different from what is on the W-2 form from your employer.

Hello, thank you for the assistance. Line 62 and line 66 are the same ($3740). Lines 60, 60a, 61-65 are all 0. I can't find a tax payment worksheet for NYS, and I did not enter the $3740, but it was computed by Turbo Tax.

Line 17 on my W-2 shows $1870 withheld, which as you noted is 1/2 of 3740.

I still don't understand how or why Turbo Tax place 3740 on line 62. Is this a Turbo Tax error?

It is extremely unlikely that it's a TurboTax error. I looked at a couple of New York nonresident tax returns and TurboTax calculated IT-203 line 62 correctly.

You have to look at your W-2 forms in TurboTax, not the W-2 that you got from your employer. The simplest way to do this would be to look at Form IT-2 in your New York tax return. Form IT-2 is a summary of the W-2 forms that were entered in TurboTax, which might be different from the W-2 form from your employer. There can be two W-2s on Form IT-2, and there might be more than one IT-2. Make sure you look at them all. On the IT-2, box 17a is the amount of New York state tax that was withheld. See if there is more than one W-2 with $1,870 in box 17a, or if a W-2 has $3,740 in box 17a. Line 62 on Form IT-203 is the sum of box 17a from all of the W-2s.

If you find a W-2 on Form IT-2 with $3,740 in box 17a, it doesn't necessarily mean that you entered it that way, but it does indicate an entry error. If your find $3,740 in box 17a on Form IT-2, I will tell you how to look further to figure out how that happened.

I used the on-line version and paid $59 for Turbo Tax NY State version. I would like that amount refunded to me please, as I was unable to file on line, and ended up printing and mailing in a copy to NY State.

Sorry, in the Online version the fees are to prepare the return whether you efile or print and mail it. Did you figure out why line 66 was wrong or seemed double the withholding?
