Kansas State Tax/1099R Form

Background:  Last year I was penalized by the state of KS for over reporting on my retirement income.  KS allows for not paying state tax on military retirement.  I receive both a military retirement and an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) (Federal) retirement.  My OPM retirement was also included in the non taxable category for KS which is incorrect.  I should be taxed on the OPM retirement.

I just completed my review for this year's (2020) taxes and I noticed that my OPM retirement was once again included in the nontaxable category for KS.  I'm sure that there is some block I need to check or uncheck when I enter my 1099R for OPM so that the KS tax program will know to tax my OPM retirement.  Help.  I need to know what I am doing wrong when I enter the 1099R for my OPM income.  Thanks.

    1099-R for OPM.

    1. In the federal section, go back and select edit
    2. continue until the program asks you to check the state it corresponds with.
    3. You selected KS. Continue,
    4. Where is this distribution from? Careful, because you can deduct federal civil service, Railroad Retirement Board and military retirement, KPERS or disability benefits from your Kansas taxable income.
    5. Select None of the above
    6. Continue through the screens

    Return to KS state return.

    1. Continue through until you see Here's the income that KS handles differently.
    2. Scroll to  Income that KS doesn't tax.
    3. Edit, you should now see only your DFAS.
    4. Anything that should not be there, can be deleted.
