Question

Kentucky says I owe them after auditing my 2016 taxes.

In 2016 I purchased Turbotax Deluxe for Windows to do my taxes.  Now the state of Kentucky has audited my 2016 state taxes and claim that I owe $361 plus fees.  I spoke to the auditor and he claims that my insurance premiums were claimed as a deduction incorrectly.  My insurance is through my employer, so my insurance premiums are paid pre-tax.  Is the auditor correct?  If not, how can I dispute the state's claim?

    I AM BEING AUDITED

    If you purchased Audit Defense:

    AUDIT SUPPORT

TurboTax has a special phone number for help with IRS/state tax letters, which will be easier than going through regular Customer Support.   At the page below, click on the blue button that says "Get Help from TurboTax Support".  Then it will ask you what tax year is your letter.  Then it will ask you what the letter concerns. Then it will show you the phone number during posted business hours.

Pre tax health insurance premiums are not deductible, on either federal or state.

"Pre tax" essentially means already deducted from your income, before you even report your income.  That is, the income in  box 1 (and box 16 for state), of your W-2, does not include the money deducted from your pay for health insurance.

Thank you.  I am currently trying to take a closer look, but am having trouble accessing my 2016 tax return.  I have the Turbo Tax 2016 file, but I no long have a copy of the program.  I still have Turbo Tax 2018, but it will not allow me to open the 2016 file.  How can I open the 2016 file?

    Thanks

you need to get the 2016 desktop app. try to contact support to see if they'll push a free copy to you.

you should install the updates before opening the file.  you may need at first to create a dummy return
