Question

Last year I should not have filed a state return with Ohio as a non-resident. How do I completely UNDO my Ohio state return?

Because my husband's job became a complete "work from home" situation, we really should not be paying for both WI and OH state taxes like we did when he used to commute back and forth the first year he was hired. But TurboTax forced me to file both WI and OH and I didn't question it. After speaking to a friend who's an accountant, she made me realize this was an error and I should only have file for WI. How to I undo my OH return so that we no longer owe them taxes for 2020? (Yes, we still haven't paid.)

Did you have income taxes withheld for Ohio?  If so, you would want to still file to claim a refund. You would amend to note that he had no Ohio income by removing all of the income from Ohio and filing the amended return.

If he did not have taxes withheld you can  Amend Your Return  for just the state to change your return to tell them you do not owe them any taxes.  You will do this by removing all of the income and in the explanation section you will just say he did not physically work in Ohio, he was a remote employee.

You will need to print and mail the amended return.
