Question

Live in AZ but spent 2020 working in UT. Confused regarding the Other State Tax Credit part of the return.

I filed my nonresident return for Utah, which gave me no refund or amount owed, but when I get to the "Other State Taxes Summary" page for my Arizona return, I can't seem to get it to recognize the wages and income tax paid to Utah. It just keeps coming up as a $0 credit amount. Is this normal?

It depends. If your Utah form is $0, it may mean you had no Utah tax liability, in which case you would not receive a credit on your Arizona return.

Check Utah Form TC-40. Is there any amount on line 22 (Utah tax). Alternatively you can check the UT Tax Summary in TurboTax.

  1. Click Tax Tools on the left column
  2. Then Tools
  3. In Tools Center click View Tax Summary
  4. Select UT Tax Summary. Check if there is a number in Total Tax. If it's $0 there is no credit
  5. Click Back in the left column when you are done

Did you complete your non-resident UT tax return before you did your home state AZ return?  In TT, the sequence is important so that the program can correctly calculate and apply the credit.
