Could you please help me :

I lived in Md from Jan-Jul and moved to DC in Aug-Dec 31, 2023.

Do I need to file 2 part time resident ?

I worked in DC but while resident of MD but they took DC taxes.

The other company took DC taxes and lived in DC

The third compay took MD taxes while in MD .

I owe to DC and MD has to refund .

Do I need to file 2 different states and get and pay the money showed in my summary reports for each state or can I transfer the money owe to my refund state since they are reciprocal  states

Thank you so much

Opinion:  You have a mess.   You'd be better served by having your taxes done by a local professional this year.

(The one DC income/withholding while you were a MD resident, needs to be declared as MD income without MD withholding, and zero DC income with DC withholding for that particular W-2.  Some of those states/DC have special procedures&forms for that situation...but on a Part-Yr situation, I have no idea how that works out)

.....and NO, you cannot have a refund from one state auto-transferred to the other.   Refunds and taxes owed for different states...have to go thru you.

Yes, for tax year 2023 you have to file a part-year resident tax return in both DC and MD.

Since DC and MD have tax reciprocity, ALL the income you earned while a resident of DC is taxable by DC, and ALL the income you earned while a resident of MD is taxable by MD.   Reciprocity means that you are only taxed by your resident state.

In the Personal Info section of TT, enter your state of residence as DC, and indicate that you also lived in MD.  You became a resident of DC on the day you began living in DC with the intent of making it your new main, primary home.  Answer NO to the question about having income from another state.

You should enter your W-2's as is, but you should allocate your income to either DC or MD according to your dates of residence in each.  Whether you owe taxes or get a refund will depend on whether or not your withheld taxes exceed your taxes due.

As @SteamTrain said, you cannot apply one state's refund to pay another state's tax bill.
