I live in NJ but work for a company that is based in NC, do I file income taxes in both states?

Where should I file my income taxes? Do I have to pay income taxes in both states?

You must file a tax return in your home state of NJ.  Your home state can tax all your income, regardless of where you earn it.

You do not have to file in NC unless you actually (physically) worked in NC.  In that case you would file both a resident NJ return and a non-resident NC return.  NC can tax non-residents on income earned from work performed in NC.

If you actually did work in NC, prepare the non-resident NC tax return first, before your home state return.  NJ will credit you for the taxes paid to NC.
