Question

Live in VA but taxes were withheld for DC

We lived in VA all of 2023. When we moved back to the Northern VA area, our jobs withheld taxes for DC instead of VA. Before we were able to get it corrected $2797.10 in DC taxes were withheld for me and my spouse. Are there are any options to get this money refunded to apply to our VA state income taxes?

Yes and no.  File a non-resident request for refund (D-40B).  You can get a refund for the DC taxes, but it won't be applied to your VA return automatically.   You have to pay any shortage on your VA return, but you can recoup those withheld taxes from DC.     Nonresident return info
