I have a medical consulting business, working entirely from home in WA. I received 1099-NEC forms from companies in UT, MA and CA. Is that why TurboTax wants me to file state returns??

TurboTax will be prompting you to file multiple state returns if there is a state code on your 1099-NECs. Or you may have said in Personal Info that you made money in other states.

If you are self-employed and worked entirely from home, then you are not subject to tax in California, Massachusetts or Utah. You can tell TurboTax to skip those states. If you already clicked on them, go back to states and delete them.
