Lived 5 month in another state for school

Hello,

I lived in NH for 5 months in 2023 for school.  My resident state is MA.  The company I worked for all of 2023 is in NH and no state tax was withheld.  When I file my taxes, do I say I lived in NH for 5 month and MA for 7 months, or is my resident state for the year still MA?

thank you,

If you are a dependent student, you are a resident of the state in which the person that claims you lives.

New Hampshire has no state income tax, so you would only file a Massachusetts return.

Thank you!  If I'm not a dependent of my parents on their tax return, is the answer the same?

Yes, if you intend on returning to MA after school.   Being away at school is a temporary absence.   If you made a permanent move to NH and file your own taxes - then you are a NH resident and don't need a MA return.
