Question

Lived in 2 states but only worked in 1. Spouse worked in both states. Where do the W-2s go for mail-in file?

My husband and I lived in Mississippi until October 2020. We both worked in Mississippi. We moved to Louisiana, and he continued working from the same company, but at a Louisiana branch. I have three W-2 forms all from Mississippi. He has one W-2 form with a Mississippi line and a Louisiana line, though there are two Copy 2s for state filing. We are filing jointly by mail. How do I send the W-2 forms? I know the federal filing will have a copy for all W-2 forms, I think my three W-2 forms will only be sent with the Mississippi filing, but I have no idea what to do with his W-2 that has both states information on one copy. Help.

You need to send a copy of every W-2 with state withholding to every state listed.

So if you have one W-2 that has withholding for two states which you need to attach to two different states, I would just make a photocopy of that state copy and attach it to the other state return so that each state return has one.

If you are not given two copies of the state version of the W-2, then you have to do what you have to do, and that's make a copy and submit it.

This should not be a problem.
