Living in Hawaii - May go to California for two weeks

I live in Hawaii and pay Hawaii state taxes. I am work from home and was thinking about going to California for two weeks and stay with a friend. I would plan on still working from there. Would I need to file a separate state tax form for California or is there some thresholds that I stay under to not have to file a separate state refund?

Yes, CA does have filing thresholds for non-residents.

There are two filing thresholds: one based on your total gross worldwide income, and one based on your California adjusted gross income.  If you have California-source income, then you must file a non-resident CA tax return if your income exceeds either threshold amount.  You will find the specific details and numbers in this CA tax reference:

https://www.ftb.ca.gov/file/personal/residency-status/part-year-and-nonresident.html#Do-I-need-to-file-

Income you earn from work physically carried out within California is California-source income.

ALL your income, including any earned in California, will continue to be taxable by your resident state of Hawaii; but you will be able to claim a credit on your HI return for any tax paid to CA on income that is taxed by both states.  In effect the credit prevents double taxation, which is prohibited by federal law.

@TomD8  Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know if the Worldwide income and California adjusted gross income is annual or just for the time spent working in California?

Your return reflects annual amounts.
